Thoughts From My Own Corner of the World

Fear of fire trucks, a new valentines day tradition, and they call it mellow yellow? February 14, 2009

Well I havent posted for a couple of days, mainly because Ive been busy writig papers, and the idea of typing even more, even for fun wasnt too appealing.  But Im back, and I actually get to blog tonight, which is amazing because I spent most of the day without power here at the house.  Im not sure what happened…no storms that Im aware of but, definately no power.  The entertainment for the evening came from reading Mao’s On Guerrilla Warfare until the sun went down too much for me to see the print, and then I watched the firetrucks that all arrived in the neighborhood with my roomie Josh for an hour.  Our guesses as to the presence of the fire trucks was either gas leak or downed power line, cause there was no visible smoke or flames., but it could have been an electrical fire too with all of the seizure inducing flickering of lights we put up with tonight.  Either way I have decided that Honolulu Emergency Response management could be better.  For whatever the problem was, three different fire trucks showed up at the scene…I decided that if a fourth showed up then it was overkill cause a fire could be waging somewhere else on the island and there would have been no one to respond to it!  It was entertaining to watch the firetrucks try and manuever around my neighborhood (which has hilly, curvy, and dead end roads all over the place…plus very thin lanes).  It was humerous.  And my education for the night came not from my book, but from my roomate who I discovered has an irrational fear of fire trucks!  Maybe my tsunami obsession isnt so weird now?!

In case you missed the news, and I know everyone is wanting ot know this one, Zimbabwes powersharing deal is about to die…again.  For all of you out there who were hoping that this time it would be successful, Im sorry.  Tsvangirai may have made it into office as PM but good ole Mugabe decides that he wasnt going to honor the powersharing arrangements within the cabinet appointments and arrested the opposition cabinet appointee Bennett on suspicion of treason.  Good ole Mugabe.  This was so predictable!  Something gets rough, arrest someone or shoot someone….cause thats always the answer!

Something thats not so predictable, but just as distrubing in a different way may be India’s new idea for a drink.  Apparently a new soft drink will be launched that is made from Cows urine.  Now I realize that cows are sacred in India, and that sometimes cows urine is drunk at religious festivals and for medical purposes, but to market it beyond the “special occasion” for mainstream consumption is making my stomach quesy just thinking about it.  I may be very open minded about many things, and willing to try almost any food, but this is one im going to have to say no to.

Now many of you who know me realize that Valentines Day is not my favorite holiday.  Its not because im single, and get depressed, but instead is linked to the cookie shop, and the hours upon hours i spent every V-day decoraing cookies and not sleeping. I cant think about the holiday without thinking about insomnia, cookies, and the nights with Dan checking over EVERY order. I miss the craziness of it, but am glad not to have to see, eat, or smell a cookie right now!  That may be how I spent many V-days but in a weirder twist to the holiday many Indian women decided that filling local bars and sending cartons of pink panties to a local Hindu radical group who is anti-women, is the best way to spend the holiday.  Hmmm…maybe this can become my new holiday ritual…pink panty mailing, bar hopping, fun….we’ll see.

Well Im off to spend sometime on the computer…cause there is POWER!!!

Later!

Painful days, bull riding fools, and who needs offense? Oh right the Packers! September 28, 2008

Well, I’m beginning to think that my Sundays are cursed!  My Packers lost yet again, this time in the Battle of the Bays.  The opening drive was great, but then the rest of the game was horrid, at least from the offensive point of view.  Tramon Williams did what was needed from him in place of Harris, but Bigby was missed…Rouse just isn’t the same!  The one good thing was Woodsons Interception for TD!  Awesome!  My offense had better find a way to protect the QB and make plays, because, I will be getting angrier if they continue to loose.  Right now Im rooting for Philly so that Green Bay remains atop their division!  Come on Eagles (I cant believe Im saying those words…or rather typing them!)

Ok, off football, and onto roommates.  I spent all night last night hanging with my “lil bro” Eric.  What did we do?  Talk about all his girl drama and then watch a TV show about extreme athletes and their brushes with death…Snowmobiles (not that deadly), tow in surfing(ok I can see that), bicyclists “boxing” (just plain funny), basejumping from buildings (looks like fun!)…but bull riding and extreme bike cliff jumping are just plain insane!  The only time I flinched over the enitre night was the bull riding, which #1 brush with death was an angry bull who made the rider his doll and tried to eat him! Ok, I can honestly say I will never date a bull rider now because they are nuts!  Even the bike cliff jumper, although crazy, I can understand (even after he was paralyzed).  Who knows what we will watch tonight, but I have a feeling that it will be something completely bizarre because thats what Eric always finds!

Until then, Im off to read Haas and Gordon Lauren and try to finish those chapters so I can write a paper due Tuesday.  At least Ive finished Mondays paper, although Im not sure my analysis is all that great, but I followed the format he laid out, so hopefully I don’t bomb it!

See some of you as early as Wednesday night and Thursday am upon my return to Ohio…and all most everyone else I will see Saturday as we PARTY!

Later!

So I have sepnt all day in the one of 2 libraries between both HPU campus’s and all I have been doing is reading.  On the plus side, I finished my reading for next tuesdays class, and in theory, the paper that goes with it!  Not exactly how I saw myself spending my birthday, but hey, what the hell.  It all needs to get done anyways.  With any luck I will be drinking tomorrow night after I get out of class with a few people, and if not, theres always the beach party on saturday!

Im updating my daily blog early because the wi-fi at home has been on the fritz.  It’s suppose to be getting fixed, and if it doesn’t soon I think Eric (my roomie) will be ready to punch something!  Whats with miltary boys anyways?!

Well Im off to read more of “War before Civilization” so that I can finish it this weekend and write a paper on it thats due next week…wish me luck!

High winds, sleepless nights, and a little lion killing September 14, 2008

No luck sleeping last night.  I think I got about 2 hours of rest before I had to get up at 6am to watch the Pre-game shows for my beloved Packers!  Oh well.  I’ve had worse.  The most entertaining part is that Eric my roomie couldn’t sleep either and we kept running into each other in the kitchen and living room while we were pacing.  I think I have found a suitable replacement for that late night wacky ghost/zombie that lives in Ohio (hmm…does anyone know whom I’m talking about? A few do I bet!).   He gets giddy and a little stupid when he gets no sleep…needless to say it was a fun laugh fest last night.

Hurricane Ike has apparently found its way to Ohio.  Its not often one can say in ohio that the weather is due to a hurricane…but with the high winds leading to no power and missing roofs…im gonna call it safe to bet that Hurricane Ike has arrived!  The funniest news from the mainland is that Kentucky is slowly earning its reputation for not being the brightest state in the bunch (although you can’t say anything about their heart and intentions).  Apparently they were preemtive and sent most of their electical guys to Texas to help with the hurricane.  The result…Louisville could now be without power for a week or more!  Go figure!  Hopefully Leenee you find a safe haven to work from soon!

To sum up todays football games: There were definately some unexpected upsets.  SF over SEA anyone? or how about SD losing yet again?!  Even my team had a scare in the 4th when Detroit retook the lead.  I had bad Thanksgiving day flashbacks of losing at Ford field after we were leading (albeit without the turkey or grandmas cheesie veggie casserole!).  But a few of my favorite men stood up and helped us out…thats right…my beloved Defense stepped up when it counted!  I love you Woodson!  You can intercept anytime!

Back to watching the Pit/Cle game with the high winds even a factor there.  Oh yeah and reading of course!

Later!
