Thoughts From My Own Corner of the World

The ultimate dream job, finger finances, and the daily grind January 13, 2009

Ok….so if you had to come up with the best job in the world, what would it include? Sleeping, eating, relaxing?  How about all of the above, and doing it on a private island all to yourself?  Australia has launched a global search for someone to come live on an island with its own beach house for you to live in, and all you have to do is go have fun, explore the island, swim with the fishies, and occasionally blog about the experience and talk to the media about your life…sounds great huh!  Did I mention they are paying over $100,000 US Dollars in salary too…thats even better…for that I might consider swimming with the fishies at least once….Now thats a good job…well maybe…I would willing do it for awhile, but I tend to need some thought provoking, mind bending, problem solving work to keep me happy…so maybe this Island dream job isnt for me…

Speaking of islands, Im officially back on the rock known as Oahu…did you like that segway?! My room is smelling fresh and clean, and the humidity in it is slowly dying a slow death…thank you fans and windows… You know Im desperate when I buy Lysol spray at the grocery store!  It gets my allergies going, but I decided the kind that kills mold and mildew would be a good thing to have right now… I made my venture to the grocery store and bought more than usual…but then again I havent been here for 4 weeks, and everything either spoiled due to power outages or I was in need of like trash bags and toilet paper (not to mention cleaning supplies), so I ended up being “lazy” or smart(depends on how you loook at it) and called a taxi to take me home…I still had to do the 82 stairs with all the bags, but I wont have to buy much for awhile…

And in science, apparently finger length may predict financial success…well at least a study of men only could detect a mans success as a financial trader…but what if this applied to everyone?!  My little fingers would be broke…wait a minute, they already are! Guess it could be a sign as to why I always aim for the non-profit, human services jobs with no pay…stupid fingers!

Oh well, Im off to read..

Later!

Cafeteria trays, surfer boys, and the Waikiki pier September 3, 2008

So todays adventures included some more adventures at Waikiki and the beginning of the never ending reading pile for my HPU grad classes.  I decided that my favorite place, the Waikiki Pier, would be a great place to “study”.  I soon discovered I got more done on the bus ride then at the pier, but it was worth it.

The pier was filled with a combination of locals and tourists like normal, but today, although I was a perceived haole, I was no longer a tourist to some of the local boys.  That was a welcome change, I guess a few are recognizing me now!  So I spent some time taking some more pictures of the surfer boys and enjoyed the massive wave splashes that come from the water hitting the pier.  I’ll have to try and get a few pics of that event as well as some of the locals pier diving.  It is insane to watch…maybe I’ll have to do video, because they are very inventive on their jumps, from flips, to cannonballs, to some odd belly flop techniques…and more.  I discovered today that some of the locals like to play tricks on the tourists by making “seal” sounds by putting their mouth to the water somehow.  It’s funny to watch,l because you have all these tourists looking around for a seal…and yes I fell for it…ONCE!

I spent that day talking to a surfer dude named Alec,  he’s about 25 and has lived here all his life.  He is definately known, baecause gramps was there today and was yelling at him for picking on the tourists with the seal calls.  It was funny.  He spent a good portion of the day trying to ride waves in towards the pier and jumping up and grabbing the rim of the pier…it was funny to watch, because one he never succeeded, and two because he scared the wits out of a couple of Japanese tourists!  His buddies were given him flack for talking to me, a haole, but ti was okay…they weren’t too serious.  And before everyone gets their pants in a bunch…no I am not dating him!

So I discovered a new and fascintaing use for cafeteria trays today!  So everyone knows (well at least UD students know) that stealing cafeteria trays for sledding is one fun thing to do with them, but how about boogy-boarding on a tray…it was fun to watch.  I didn’t think it would work because the guy was so big compared to the tray but apperently it works, but you must have flippers too (according to Alec).

So after a long bus ride home with a stop off at the ever present Safeway grocery store, I am home, cooling down and red beyond belief…and yes I did use lotion!

Enjoy the pics above!

PS:  I have hit over 500 views on my blog..thanks and keep coming by!

Boredom and the cost of living August 22, 2008

Ok so no new pics today…More will be coming!  I promise!  Im still trying to adjust to the time changes…and while back in Ohio I was a night owl, here I seem to be an early bird!  This is also helped by the sun rising in my face every morning!  I can’t wait for school to start….Im getting really bored!  Or at least for next Monday, so I can get my bus pass for 1/2 price through HPU and I can explore a litle more.

Todays adventures can be pretty much summed up by one place: Foodland.  I have found the closest grocery store to my place and it is tiny.  It also consists of over 2 miles of walking(not including those dang steps) along with the bus!  Grocery shopping today really showed me that eating out at Subway every day would be cheaper then buying groceries!  $6 for milk!  $4 for 2 pears! $4 for a can of soup!  Its insane. (ps: gas is at $4.50 a gallon).  Madness I tell you.  To not exactly fill the 2 cloth grocery bags Colleen gave me it cost me $60! (But Im loving those bags by the way!) Oh well.  Im set on food at least through the weekend.

So far my favorite place I have found is Fort Street in Downtown Honolulu.  Its a pedestrian only street where local farmers, and artisans have booths set up, as well as local restaurants and shops lining the street.  it doesn’t hurt that a section of it is part of HPU downtown campus.  So far food is cheaper here then at the grocery store…so farmers markets here I come! Also, the downtown campus isn’t what you’d think of of a normal college campus.  It is really part of Downtown and real chaotic in layout.  It’s gonna suck finding things here at times(at least until I get use to it).

Tomorrow I’ll try to catch you all up on my roommates…unless something more entertaining comes along!
