Thoughts From My Own Corner of the World

Delayed blogging, bonfires, and relaxation galore May 24, 2009

Well I have discovered that being back in Ohio has led me to neglecting my blog…which is sad…so Im going to try and rekindle it…

I have spent alot of time at bonfires and cookouts over the past few days. Although enjoyable, my body is beginning to hate me, as I ahve welts from misquitos all over the place..and they itch, which is never helpful.  But fire is good…and beer is good…and food is good…so I will keep venturing into that world of relaxation as long as I can!

In news around to world…North Korea tested their nuclear weapons…this so cant be a good thing!  Not only does it lead to national security issues but I cant imagine all that underground testing is all that good on the environment! I mean North Korea is essentially an agricultural society, so I know I wouldnt want to eat anything grown there…Its bad enough that I lived downhill from a nuclear supersite my entire life, and it had some measures of public protection in place, but I some how doubt Kim Jong Il has made sure his people are protected from nuclear fallout…

Well the craziness of Ohio people is evident all the more since I have moved away…and I mean crazy…take for example the Toledo man who when he didnt get a nightly phone call from his mom who was traveling, decided that his neighbor had kidnapped her and stormed into their house to kill them. He was eventually killed in a bloddy shootout with police, but I cant help but wonder if 1)he was high on meth 2)where the neighbors gun was (cause come on it is Ohio) and 3) why a grown man is still a mamas boy.

In other disturbing Parent/child news…a London man tried to hire a prostitute to have sex with his 14 year old son…he said it was a gift for his sone to loose his virginity. Um when did parents push for their kids to grow up so fast?! Seriously?! At 14 I was getting the NO sex talk, not the PAY for sex talk…hmm…come to think of it…I dont think there ever was a PAY for sex talk…I cant imagine my dad having that discussion with me!

In blog news…there has been over 3000 visits…yay!

The differences between Ohio and Hawaii…. May 12, 2009

Well I made it to Ohio…and for once in my years of traveling, I had noe issues, no delays, no cancellations, no mechanical failures of planes, etc…Its almost like my curse was lifted! Almost.  Im not holding my breath cause I bet the return flight will be full of such problems!  But the flight home went smoothly.  19 hours of travel time and i finally touched down in Dayton.  In fact I touched down early! And once I departed the palne (and waited for my sis to pick me up) I got to sit and people watch at the baggage claim area.  And guess who I saw?!  Dave Chappelle!  Its kinda a weird thing to see someone famous in Dayton, OH, but then again he is from the Springfield area.

There are several oddities about living in Hawaii and then coming back to Ohio. Like for example, the fact that when I went to the grocery store when I got back, I went and bought a “normal” amount of groceries for me for a week, and as I watched the cashier ring things up, I was started that she was almost done scanning everything, and the price was so low!  Im use to paying 3x the amount then what I ended up paying! Also…at night in Hawaii, Im use to watching where I step so that I dont step on the geckos running around my house…and when I got up in the middle of the night, I was watching where I walked…although there was no need!  Old habits die hard. Finally…I didnt miss Ohio…and I was reminded why not the first hour off the plane. In Hawaii, my allergies are virtually non-existent…but here, i rely on allergy meds to breath!  It so sucks!

Well Im off to see Em and get some much needs TLC of my hair.  Im not sure which color I will be when I leave, but it will be different then what I currently have going.  No more red.

Bold moves by the US, Bold Comments from Cheney, and more January 8, 2009

Can I just say that I am in utter shock that the US actually abstained from a vote at the UN security council over the Israel/Gaza issue and thus allowed the UN to order a cease fire…wow!  Now the ultimate in gutsy moves would have been that the US actually voted for the cease-fire and told Israel to back off and seek other methods to the issue at hand, but at least by abstaining the US allowed the measure to pass…especially since they were the only ones that voted against any measure before…and were the only holdouts!  Yay US!  I can actually say Im happy! Now lets see if the UN name means anything and see if Israel or Hamas actually agree to abide the order…

I love haw Cheney is maintaining that the CIA did nothing illegal in interrogations…thats a big and bold statement.  Especially since its his belief that Bush should pre-emptively pardon anyone at the CIA involved in harsh interrogations of suspected terrorists. Now any actions may not have been explicitly illegal, but there has been this shade of gray surrounding the law in regards to classified terrorists in part thanks to that nifty piece of legislation called The Partiot Act, but Im sure there was some line crossing, and if not illegal, then probably unjust and immoral…I wonder how history will judge this…

Ive noticed that my blogging has been slacking since Ive landed back here in Ohio…Ive been busy! There have been a lot of friends and family to see, Ive been volunteering, and taking a class…plus the holidays…plus I find blogging more therapeutic when I have time to detox and remove myself from the world…for some reason its easier to do in Hawaii…so next week my nightly blogging will resume…

PS: The blog has had over 2000 visits in 4 months..yay!

APSI visits, India the cat, and escape to Africa January 5, 2009

Well today I got to go up to Springfield and visit with some of my former individuals with APSI.  It was fun and good to see them!  Several were excited to see me, and it was also good to see some of those who have moved into the community in their new places, all seems to be doing well!

I love the fact the the “first cat” of the white house was named India…hmm…maybe Fareed Zakaria’s  theory as India as the natural ally for the US isnt farfetched…not that I thought it was, but if the US named the “first cat” after the country, then its a shout-out to the country…too bad the cat has died…hopefully that doesnt mean India the country is not going to be our friend anymore…talk about bad omens.

I gotta give my props to the three German kids who decided they were fed up with the weather in Germany and tried to take a trip to Africa by themselves. On top of it the older boy and girl (age 6 and 7) decided they would marry in Africa, and brought the 5 year old sister of the golder girl as a witness…They only made it as far as the local train station…I wonder if they have watched a little too much Madigascar?!

Jessie and Joe hamming it up at Hofbrau

Well its Sunday, and that means more football!  Yay!  Go Philly…down with Vikings!  Ok…well last night was a blast.  Gotta love a Hofbrauhaus!  Its always interesting to be watching football and drinking beer, while listening to a German Polka Band! I did plenty of drinking and eating as well as plenty of table/bench dancing!  Im just glad I wasn’t chosen for the German celebration ritual of drinking beer from a baby bottle…first I woulda sucked at it…literally and figuratively, and secondly, it would have meant further embarrassing pictures of me! So instead of embarrassing pictures, I left with a clinking purse, walking right in front of the local cops with a purse full of HB glasses…including 2 liter steins. I love my purse, it was the best purchase I made in HI so far…it can fit a dead body if it had to I bet!  And everypne makes fun of it, but then turns to me when they need glasses smuggled…hahah…

But I did get fun video and pictures, hope you all enjoy!

A highway egg scramble, when not to call 911, and more on Bush January 2, 2009

Gotta love Bush and his ability to spin the news…So apparently Hama’s attacks on Israel are an act of terrorism…anything to keep the fear and the war on terror present in anyones mind.  It doesnt seem to matter that Israel helped instigate those attacks, and should share some blame for the current situation!  I don’t care if Israel or Hamas started the recent events, what matters is that it stops, and apparently Bush also seems to think he has the answers for this as well….as he has stated that no peace will be had until there is oversight on weapons being smuggledto terrorist groups…Hmmm…I have multiple problems with this…for one, terrorists aren’t the only ones to use weapons…and secondly, who is the largest weapons smuggler in the world?  Oh right, its the US government!  Weapons smuggling is big business, and often we dont even smuggle them…heck we gave Israel the technology for missiles that may have been fired at Hamas strongholds earlier!  Smuggling weapons to the terrorists groups is small change, how about sharing weapons with nations who are kinda crazy or in the very least seem to have someone always pissed off at them?!  If Bush thinks monitoring weapons traffic is the move, he obviously doesnt realize that would mean allowing an independent agency (UN,etc) to monitor our weapons transactions, legit or not.  Im somehow betting thats not going to happen!  Im not anti-Israeli, or anti anyone, but I am anti-death and war.  I wouldnt care if it was Canada bombing some country, Id still feel the same about the current situation and the Presidents “logical” theory on how to end it…

Now onto some humorous and sobering news out of North Dakota…a 17 year old girl decided to drive drunk…to make matters worse she decided that driving while impared wasn’t enough so she decided to make a phone call…thats the sobering part…the funny part was who she called….she called 911 to report that she was driving drunk.

Talk about egg in your face…a Semi truck driver crashed and began what coulda been the worlds largest omelet…if only he had called the Guinness Book of World records first…Unfortunately the highway scramble mess shut down the highway in Michigan for a short time, but all is being removed…Here’s the link for the video of the egg crash,…enjoy…

Happy New Years to all, and the craziness of 2009…already… December 31, 2008

Happy New Years! Hope everyone stayed up late and had fun with friends and family!  I know our little game night with wine and champagne was a success…lots of wine…alwyas a good thing!  And the entertainment always comed from my friends…and stellas drawing skills of Mt Rushmore…

I wonder what the new year will bring, although its definitely starting off in a bad spot…horrible economy, war in Irag and Afghanistan, disasters around the world, crazy athletes already causing trouble before the first hour of 2009 has passed…well maybe a little before… 2009…definitely the end of 2008. In case you have no clue what Im talking about, Charles Barkley was arrested in AZ. He was pulled over for speeding and a DUI…when asked by the officer why, he said he was on his way to get a blowjob, and that he was pulling around the corner to get one from his passenger…apparently he proceeded to tell the cop he had one a week earlier and it was the best one hes ever had and asked the cop if he thought the girl was hot…um…Charles…i’d expect to hear from divorce lawyers pretty soon… This one ranks up there with Plexico shooting himself…poor athletes…it must be hard to live a life of athletics…what with all that money, and publicity, and of course the chicks…(well unless you are a chick…well…nevermind)

The top ten reasons to thank President Bush December 30, 2008

Well the Packers went out with a victory which is better then nothing…however, the Vikings pulled out a win and the NFC North Championship…damn!  Oh well…Im not expecting them to survive round 1 of the playoffs…Go Philly!

So a recent article I read disturbed me a little…Condaleeza Rice believes that soon everyone will be thanking Bush for his service and the actions he took for the US…and doesnt believe that the US is disliked in the world, or that the Bush doctrine hurt the United States foreign policy approach for the future…Um…did an alien suck out her brain and replace it with mush? Well, granted Im sure someone someday will thank Bush for something…Im kinda doubting it will be anytime soon, or for the reasons she believes…granted we are at the end of the Bush years now, so my view may be tainted by recent events and propaganda from the media, but even then I am still betting her theory and beliefs are whack.  So to commemorate this belief, Ive decided to create the top 10 things to thank Bush for…

10) His African dancing…without it, John Oliver, John Stewart, and other comedians would be at a loss for comedic material.

9) His vocabulary…need I say more

8)His ability to stall by doing a jig

7) His recognition that he is disliked and being able to make fun of it at his portrait hanging

6) His ninja shoe dodging skills…without it we would not have the recent video game phenomenon

5) He introduced us to the book, My Pet Goat

4)His ability to make everything controversial…without it we would not have the Michael Moore of today or Fahrenheit 911

3)  His ability to declare victory with banners and speeches…gotta love the mass media attention he commanded..after all “Missions Accomplished”

2) His ability to glare at Putin as if Putin was a little kid who did something wrong…Every world leader likes to be stared at disapprovingly!

1) The fact that a single letter can represent such controversy…”W”

Red duct tape, chicken cordon bleu, and Obamas powerless night December 27, 2008

Gotta love it when power outages across Oahu isn’t the news as much as whether Obama’s Kailua retreat was without power as well….Forget basic info like when to expect power, what events are cancelled, etc when Obama’s in town…after all…the President elect can’t sit in the dark like us mere mortals!  Give me a break news media!  (Ps he did lose power for 11 hours)

So I have been a cooking fiend.  I cooked Chicken Cordon Bleu for 16 people tonight for my Aunts 60th Birthday party, which was a progressive dinner and a surprise.  All went well, and I got to end the night watching my Dad and Uncle attempt to play Guitar Hero on the Wii…now that was funny…too bad I didnt have a video camera available!

I know that people who talk during a movie can be annoying, but apparently someone got so fed up that they shot a man who was talking during a movie in Pennsylvania.  Now Im thinking thats a little extreme…I personally am for carrying around a roll of duct tape…preferabbly the red kind…and think tape should be a first alternative rather than resorting to bullets.  The tape makes a statement, and wont actually hurt anyone…unless you count the red skin and pain from ripping the tape off a face, then I guess it would hurt, but not as bad as being shot.

Well off to read some more…im beginning to resent taking this online class over winter break…stupid me!

Merry Christmas everyone!  Hope all had a great day! So my gifts under the tree were mainly books on the Congo…Yay!  Grad Thesis!  Gotta love gifts that have practical applications.

So Ive eaten too much…I hate the holidays sometimes because of this!  Everyone always brings food over and our fridge is full!  I will be happy when the fridge empties some!

So the strange gift of the year goes to my dad.  He got a BlueRay DVD of an aquarium…yes…it just has fish swimming around.  He likes it because its an aquarium he doesnt have to clean…and I now have pictures of my brother-in-law trying to grab a fish from the screen and being an idiot acting like hes swimming with them…pictures will be posted soon to give everybody a better idea of how ridiculous it looks!  I did say that this was my idea of snorkeling…so thats how the crazy picture taking started.

Off to relax and read…gotta love WWI during the holidays!
